{"id":2460,"date":"2020-08-15T19:42:49","date_gmt":"2020-08-16T03:42:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.billdugan.com\/scout\/?p=2460"},"modified":"2020-08-15T19:42:49","modified_gmt":"2020-08-16T03:42:49","slug":"soft-top-score","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.billdugan.com\/scout\/2020\/08\/15\/soft-top-score\/","title":{"rendered":"Soft Top Score"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a title=\"IMG_9709\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/idiotking\/50231205146\/in\/photostream\/\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/50231205146_4be124c448_b.jpg?resize=1024%2C768&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"IMG_9709\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" \/><\/a><script async src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>I drove down to my friend&#8217;s house Saturday morning to pick up the $50 soft top, and after running some errands this afternoon I took about an hour to check it out in the driveway. <em>The verdict:<\/em> I scored a hell of a deal.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"IMG_9692\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/idiotking\/50231205186\/in\/dateposted\/\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/50231205186_e7d60dcfe9_b.jpg?resize=768%2C1024&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"IMG_9692\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/a><script async src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s probably thirty years old at this point (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fourwheeler.com\/news\/0204-4wd-4x4-off-road-news-4x-news\/\">Kayline went out of business in the early 2000&#8217;s<\/a>) but the canvas is all holding up extremely well. There isn&#8217;t a tear or rip in any of it that I can see. The windows, which are usually the first thing to yellow and crack due to UV exposure, are clearer than the ones on my black top.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"IMG_9695\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/idiotking\/50230561573\/in\/photostream\/\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/50230561573_6193294f60_b.jpg?resize=768%2C1024&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"IMG_9695\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/a><script async src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>He wasn&#8217;t kidding about the seams coming loose: there are several places where the stitching has come undone and will need to be re-sewn, mainly along the driver&#8217;s side zipper, and up front above the passenger door along the drip rail.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"IMG_9697\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/idiotking\/50230561423\/in\/photostream\/\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/50230561423_b79273647f_b.jpg?resize=1024%2C768&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"IMG_9697\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" \/><\/a><script async src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>I laid it out on the driveway and checked out all the parts. He included all the bows and hardware, and from the looks of things they are the stuff that&#8217;s aged the worst. The door frame units both suffer from serious rust. The aluminum snap channels are all dinged up pretty well, and the windshield channel is bent. But it&#8217;s nothing some sandblasting and a good paint job can&#8217;t fix.<\/p>\n<p>I laid it out over the black top and took a few pictures, and then said <em>fuck it<\/em> and pulled the black top off completely. It took about 10 minutes to snap it in place, arrange the rear strap (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.billdugan.com\/scout\/2017\/10\/22\/strapped-2\/\">one of which is missing, sound familiar?<\/a>) and roll up the windows, and I had it on completely. There&#8217;s only one crack in the windows, about two inches long, on the driver&#8217;s side about halfway down, but everything looks clean.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m going to leave it on for a week or two and wash the black top (it needs a wash <em>desperately,<\/em> as does this one) and then decide which one to keep on for the rest of the summer.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I drove down to my friend&#8217;s house Saturday morning to pick up the $50 soft top, and after running some errands this afternoon I took about an hour to check it out in the driveway.
