Scout 800 To-Do List

Whoo boy, I really stepped in it on this one. There is a lot of work to do here. In rough order, here’s how I see things:

  • Dump more MMO down the cylinders, and get the engine to spin free The engine is free and I got it to start.
  • Check the oil it’s full, but the oil is black. It’s now replaced, but the oil filter is leaking from the seal, so I have to drain it and fix this.
  • Pull the battery out
  • Pull the ignition cyl out and swap with a spare Done!
  • Clean and gap the plugs Done, although one of the plugs is cross-threaded
  • Hang the doors on the truck After I got it out of the backyard I was able to get the doors hung properly.
  • Clean out the bed and remove the seat This took a good power washing, but it’s clean now.
  • Pull out some spare tail lights and replace them Two spare lenses are in place.
  • Spray everything else down with penetrant—this is ongoing
  • Test the plug wires Done. I actually used four wires from a spare set I had.
  • Pull the coil and replace it Done. I had several good used coils in my spares.
  • Rebuild the carb Done, but might still need some work.
  • Clean out the distributor, points, and rotor Done. I was able to use the original rotor but had to buy new points..
  • Test for spark Done, and working.
  • Hook up the boat tank, route the fuel to a jerry can Done. The original fuel pump is toast, so I’m using an electric pump for now.
  • Pull the distributor and prime the oil pump Done. This was challenging but I was able to make it work.
  • Figure out what hardware goes into the cab top
  • Power wash the engine Done. It’s abut 30% cleaner.
  • Rebuild the entire brake system—master cylinder, drums, and lines –
I rebuilt the front brake system and got it to hold pressure. The shoes are absolute garbage.
  • Test the alternator and see if it works
  • Find a set of replacement seats somewhere Done. I found a set of CJ-3 seats for $50.
  • Find a replacement passenger seat base
  • Find a rollbar Brendan gave me the rollbar out of the blue Mule up at Dan’s place.
  • Get the engine running and the rings free. The compression is still super-low in Cylinder 1 so she won’t start reliably. I need to get it hot to try to loosen things up, and then maybe I’ll have more luck.
